Vinyl plurbit - pattern from the Softies book. Although the 130% pattern enlargement consisted of me drawing it freehand which is why she might be a little asymmetrical - don't blame the pattern. Quick to whip up, especially because you can machine sew the opening closed - but the vinyl made it a bit hard to stuff the little legs and arms. The pattern recommends felt. Great for using up little bits and pieces from the stash. I made three.

A friend gave me her fabric stash, as in her entire lifetime's worth of collected fabrics. She said she's realised she's moved on from sewing, she's much more into printmaking and etching and so forth. So 15 boxes of fabric later, much of it linen and silk and other lovely stuff, I found this simple patchwork piece... So I made it into a tote bag and gave it back to her.

Last weekend we caught the train down to Spring Bluff. As far as local tourist attractions go, it's not bad. We saw lovely flowers, a big band and an elderly gent dancing along. We ate ice creams, and cake, and sat on the grass in the shade - a fine Sunday afternoon indeed. And we saw the mayor working the crowd, shaking hands and such. He's very tall. He doesn't look that tall on tv.

I sorted out my 'small bits' fabric piles a while ago, into cool and warm. Not surprisingly, I had a lot more warm than cool. So then the warm 'half' didn't fit back into the cupboard, so I made a quilt.

I did start out with a plan for rough log cabin blocks with a small dark square in the centre, but then I added in the other dark pieces and the plan got lost. But I think it's still ok.

Heart brooches. Made from upholstery samples, given to me by my sister-in-law's mother. They've got a pleasing depth of colour but they're a bit of a challenge to work with given the open weave and the small size of the samples. I'm not really a valentine kinda gal - I prefer to show my love on more than one day of the year - but these colours whispered in my ear, and I was thinking 'sustainable love'. It's only 10 days (eek!) before I have to go back to work - that will definitely be a shock to the system! Hence, in an attempt to make the most of my remaining free time, I've been experimenting with new patterns. Exhibit A, the pleated clutch. That red lycra make anyone else want to put on thigh high boots and grab a whip? Some of the others are a bit more sensible and/or tweedy, but that red one just screams out of the pile.

Yesterday I also planted some snakebeans, cooked a silverbeet dish that was actually tasty (lots of spices) and cleaned out my second drawer down (''cause not everything was fitting in there any more -any Tripod fans out there?) The weirdest thing I found in there was a "Good morning" stamp for your toast. With a forcibly cheery sun on it. I think if that toast came at me too early it could just put me in a bad mood for the rest of the day. Not saying I'm not a morning person, I'm just more human once I've had a cup of tea and some quiet time.

Enough rambling. Before I tell the story of that awful trip to the Falls Festival where Tripod were almost the only good thing, go check out edward and lilly's Saturday shopping list. edward and lilly make fabulous things, like this chic boots zipper pouch - speaking of boots - and one of my velvet cuffs was lucky enough to feature in this Saturday's shopping list.

Two blue beetle bug softies emerged from my studio today. Pattern from Softies book 1. I only just restrained myself from buying book 2 when I spotted it the other day, on the grounds that I've only made two softies from book one. But they're so cute and adorable! Sensible vs cute. My sensible side won, that day. But not today. I ignored the pile of dirty dishes and the floor that needs mopping - how cute are these bugs? My mum said "what's that, a fish?", I said "no it's got legs" but she still didn't get to beetle. I think maybe they should have six legs? That would be more of a clue...

I finally got around to doing another project from Bend The Rules Sewing. These heidi headbands were pretty easy, although some of my ribbons were narrower than specified and without a bodkin the tubes were a bit tricky to turn. I sent one to my sponsor child in Uganda, I hope she likes it!

And, a big shout out to Chrisy of sophism press who featured one of my brooches in a recent post on garment reuse/upcycling (alchemy?) crafting. I got a kick out of being mentioned alongside Lori Marsha and Gary Harvey.

One more thing crossed off the list: placemats. These were quilted in a batch of bibs, but I decided long ago they were way to dark for babies - well for most babies - so I ran some binding round the edges, and voila: placemats.

Brown used to be my favourite colour, but I think now it's green. I still like brown, just not as much as I like green. And nowhere near as much as this woman likes orange.

I created a golf course cake for my brother's 30th last weekend. I have to say I was pretty pleased with how it turned out. The biggest fan of the cake, though, was my 3 year old nephew Henry - he loves his golf, and he knew what it was straight away. I think he liked this cake even more than the tiger one we made for his second birthday - and he was pretty impressed with that one at the time! This green iced concoction - he was still looking for it the day after the party, and the day after that - luckily there was a lot of cake so they took plenty home!

A few weeks ago I sent in my proposal for the upcoming Reverse Garbage Christmas exhibition, entitled 'Renaissance' meaning rebirth. Below is what I wrote, and this little dress is the latest finished thing (it's reversible).

I'm pregnant with my first baby. Pondering my pending motherhood, I've been thinking a lot about birth. I've also been thinking a lot about the rebirth of myself, as a mother.

Changing priorities, changing roles. So much to learn. New skills, new experiences. It's almost overwhelming: so in order to come to terms with this new era of my life, I've created things that I would want my baby to wear, to use and love. Soft, gentle bibs, fun little dresses and one very huggable quilt. All with a vintage, ageless touch. Creations that express how I want to be, as a mother, and how I want my baby to begin. Birth and rebirth.

I think it's still appropriate: I have already been rebirthed as a mother. And I still want to think about how my baby should begin. And I'm still enjoying making little dresses. They are a perfect use for all that lace that people keep giving me!

Bad news: we had our baby two weeks ago, at 24 weeks, and she didn't make it. I just went into pre-term labour, and she was just too small. She had very long fingers and toes like her mum, and a nose like her dad. We called her Rita.

We had lots of fantastic support from family and friends - big thanks to you all - and are on the road to recovery. Looking at that little hand is still the hardest thing.

I will be back with some good news soon.

It's all about flowers here in Toowoomba this week. Who doesn't love a carnival? Despite the lack of water the flowers still manage to bloom. It really feels like spring! Since starting the Queen's Park Markets in April, Sunday was the first one we weren't sitting there shivering with blankets up to our necks. This was the view from behind our stall: giant chillies! The call of the chilli chocolate eventually got the better of me and I brought some home. Tastes just like chocolate, with a chilli aftertaste. I also quite like chilli strawberry jam.

Oh dear, it's been a while since I've been here to blog. This is my excuse: I haven't been doing nothing, as you can see... Soon we will have a little bebe! It still feels a little unreal - but that's normal, right? We've just passed halfway - I'm sure the remainder of the time will go quickly - so much to organise before then.

Actually, I have been doing a lot of nothing - very much enjoying sitting on the couch, and reading. Lots of reading. Not much crafting - there are several unfinished projects waiting very patiently on the ironing board while I spend my time moving furniture (at least, directing the moving of furniture) and mulling over baby names.

We've also been enjoying the recent spring weather, and I'm watching my beetroot and radish seeds sprouting. I check them every day to see how much they've grown. Like my belly.

I didn't mean to take such an extended blog break - but I needed it! I finally got some craft mojo back on the weekend and whipped up this generously sized tote bag. A friend at work put in her order about a month ago (see, it's not just you faithful readers who've been waiting on the edge of your seats!) - and took it in to work today, all excited - and she had the day off.

In other news, I got labels. They're giving me all sorts of professional airs. And, I made myself a skirt. The fabric is called 'Chevy' which pleases me immensely. I'm wearing a car. Heh.

Is that a real word yet, scarflettes? Why was it chosen over scarfettes? Too much like Smurfette?

Anywho, these are my latest creation - I made two prototypes but unfortunately they escaped being photographed because my mum and aunt were here at the time and they snapped them up as soon as the buttons were sewn on. These are two super-practical ladies who glance at my brooches and cuffs and move on very quickly - but scarves, and indeed scarflettes, they like. I concluded that the prototype was a success. So then I made 6 more and that's the end of the black fleecy fabric which is what makes them so cozy and tactile. I even made a dent in the magic never-ending box of fabric samples.

I had a very successful trip to Brisbane recently - so there are some more djbebe goods in Lyssy May and Reverse Garbage and a new shop called Bliss Ecowear, located at 15 Latrobe Terrace, Paddington. All three are worth a visit if you're looking for something unique, handmade, earth-friendly or all of the above.

That means, however, that my stock is somewhat depleted, and the next market stall is only one more weekend away - where does the time go? So this long weekend I'll be working on some hot water bottle covers and heat packs. I know an agronomist who is donating wheat for the heat packs and he assures me it's all "prime hard wheat" - I don't know what that means exactly but I'm not sure that it's a selling point for heat packs...

Well when I said I was finished making scarves it wasn't entirely true - but now it is... A batch of pink and purple, mauve and grey ones were finished up on the weekend. Ready for the markets on Sunday - wow 4 weeks can go quickly! This scarf is part of that batch - and doesn't it go perfectly with my new favourite teapot?

I didn't mean to take a week's holiday from blogging but you were probably sick of me anyway. I realised during that 30 day challenge that because I really only craft on the weekends I don't have that much to say, blog-wise, during the week. So I will attempt weekly posting.

Once again this on my desk pic is the result of some sneaky pre-work crafting. I've had enough of scarves for a while - and there's plenty that I haven't photographed yet. So I have moved on to tissue holders - whipping up a few for my next market stall.

Does anyone else have the urge to make their own shoes? No? Just me then. Not that I have started yet, but you know, I'm thinking about it. In a sort of learn Portuguese, travel to Iceland, clean the cobwebs off my side mirror kind of way. In the meantime, it's more tissue holders and finish of the pink batch of scarves.

This scarf now belongs to my mother - early Mothers' Day present. It's jersey, satin and velvety faux fur. Fur is hard to photograph - satin is easier.

Well I'm still undecided about the pinstripe scarf - I have already cut out some more grey ones to distract myself from the decision... In the meantime, this cuff is available on etsy. And while you're there, check out this bracelet made from yo-yos. Normally I don't condone yo-yos (I think I was scarred as a child by a particularly hideous yo-yo clown) but for some reason this appeals to me. Maybe it's the green. I'm going through a green phase.

Three scarves finished this morning, all along a red/black/grey theme. Side A fabrics all came from the magic box of fabric samples, and the Side B fabrics are knits from the stash. I really like this pinstripe scarf (more pics on flickr) - it's so soft and grey grey grey. Charcoal grey. I'm torn between listing it on etsy (poor shop is a bit bare though I am slowly stocking it with bits and pieces), my next market stall - or just keeping it! I will gladly take your suggestions...?

We bought a painting at the art show! Our first "real" art purchase - it's an ink piece called "The feather boa" but no pics yet - we have to wait until the exhibition is finished before we can get our hands on it...

Tomorrow night we're going to a friend's first solo art show, somewhere in the country, so I decided I needed something new and fabulous to wear. This is the result - green and brown cuff, featuring velvet ribbons and some sort of smocked knit fabric that came in the latest big box of fabric sample discards from Lyssy May. I finally had time and courage enough to open it. Them, actually, there were two. I think the side you can see here is meant to be the inside of the fabric, but I liked the more structural look of this side. More on flickr if you care to see the finished product. Inspired, I think, by Ms brown sparrow who I just discovered this week.

Afternoon storm today so once again not photo-taking weather. I dug this one out of the archives - part of a mobile made for Kim's baby which I never got around to posting because it was a secret project. I don't think it's even a macro. Let's just pretend. This puffer was inspired by this one and I used the lip-techniques from this book. If you've got nothing to do, browse the stupid sock creatures gallery. Endlessly amusing.

Well my first ever market stall went pretty well. It was very cold setting up, and very windy all day - but at least it didn't rain! We had lots of lookers, a few sales, and good company - so we're coming back next month! With reinforcements and sandbags for all the bits that kept getting blown over...

So, after a very long day, I am now unwinding like this spool of thread. With a glass of wine and a bit more of The Constant Gardener.

I picked up this little box of cards for free, a local electronics store closed down and left a table of stuff "free to good home". They're helping me get organised for the market. I haven't found a use for them yet but just their stern orderliness is helping me focus. I did my stocktake last night. I have 93 brooches. Seems like a lot. But what if I sell out? Oh I have other things too - 35 cards and 54 cuffs and 22 scarves... I should be ok.

Oh and Fi alerted me to this which sounds very fun - deadline for Bris is tomorrow though so will have to get cracking on the submission! Anyone else doing this?

A most lovely and excellent package arrived today from Ali. Tea cosy, pincushion, bag, beads, mixed tape (well, cd) - all totally awesome! I will have to wait until I get to work tomorrow for the tea cosy fitting. It felt a little invasive to take all the prescribed measurements of my little teapot: height, girth etc. Although you are a bit rotund, little teapot, I love you all the same. Thanks Miss A!.

And speaking of statistics , I've been secretly and somewhat obsessively keeping tabs on my blog stats, and the most popular search terms to get you here seem to be "pink elephant quilt" and "dandelion kimono". Fascinating.

Once again I have left the photography until too late for decent light. This is what I did before work this morning. (Hmmm, I could have taken the photo then - too busy wrestling with press studs - I have the broken fingernails to prove it.) I hammered the press studs onto 10 more cuffs. Cuffs with lace, cuffs with frills and cuffs with embroidered tulle. Cuffs galore!

If you're in or near Toowoomba this weekend, I'll be at the Queens Park Craft Bazaar (my first market!) so drop by and say hello.

Today was family and gardening - the only crafting I did was make a polo shirt for HandyMan (I still don't have the neck right) and make a basket liner for my nan's wheelie walker (one very happy customer). So not no crafting exactly, but no cutting edge crafting. Now we're watching Storm Boy on the telly.

Speaking of gardening, if you have a coriander plant that is out of control, this is a delicious (and easy) dip/pesto recipe:

1/2 cup macadamia nuts (raw or roasted, if they're salted omit the salt later)
1 small hot red chilli, seeded and chopped (optional)
1/4 - 1/2 cup packed fresh coriander leaves (depends how much you ike coriander)
1/4 cup cold water
1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper

Pulse nuts in food processor/blender until finely chopped.
Add the remaining ingredients and process until smooth.
Serve at room temp; keeps in fridge up to 4 days.
Note it will thicken over time so you may need to add more water later on.

To make up for lack of post yesterday... This guipure lace is a lovely buttery cream colour which is completely not captured in my photo. I think I might work it into a cuff or something - there's only about 4 inches of it. It's sitting beside my sewing machine, I dare not put it back into the black hole that is my lace/ribbon/trim/string bag which is completely out of control - it may never be found again.

Thanks to Ali's tips (she's having a giveaway too - go look!) I finished these cuffs off this afternoon - cuff links made from buttons and embroidery thread. I used a 3.5 size crochet hook which was ok but I think a smaller one would be better. I like the effect though: exactly what I was looking for - a bit of extra bling.

Just down from the cafe where we had breakfast yesterday was a camping store with 30-50% off so I snapped up a marquee - one step closer to doing the markets!

No crafting today: we just got back from the Glasshouse Mountains. We stayed with a friend who lives just at the foot of Mt Tibrogargan - awesome views.

This photo was taken on our honeymoon in Vanuatu. We had a lovely time, honest - and this was actually our favourite place. But primitive enough that if you leave the dregs in your beer bottle overnight, you will wake up to the scurrying of cockroaches. The snorkelling was excellent though!

Oh, and for the record the Christmas quilt was very well received.

I finished these two today - and two more are half-done but we're going to a 60th birthday party shortly so I have to get ready, wash the dishes, wrap the present etc. The present can be viewed here at least in part. I helped my mum make it. I am like her private consultant and sewer of bits that are "too hard". The quilt itself is not really my style but I'm assured the recipient will love it!

Since I am known amongst my friends and family as a fabric garbage can, I received a big box of fabric samples a while ago from Lyssy May - lots of stuff that's a challenge for me because it's not what I normally would sew with - lace, velour, suiting and sequins. But I never say no to fabric - so it's been sitting in the corner looking at me for quite some time now. But I have made some sequin cuffs which I am happy with. I just need to fashion some cuff links because I think that's what they need - big bead-y sparkly cuff links. Not sure yet how to do that but that's my aim for this weekend.
Oh and my Moo cards arrived! Yay!

Update: Lyssy May has just got herself a blog too - go take a look. She mentions a pincushion that I made but I have to confess that I got the voodoo idea from Ali.

I really liked these shoes when I bought them, but I hardly ever wear them - they're really not as comfortable as they look. But I wore them today and they seemed like a good subject for a macro shot. I also took one of the sole - I like how you can see all the grains of dirt and fluff.

To prove I do go for the occasional morning walk, here is a photo of the view. This is Tabletop mountain, as seen from Picnic Point. One day, I should go have a Picnic on Tabletop... Normally I just settle for the view - this spot is only 15 minutes walk from my house - and sometimes I don't even stop and look at the view - but it is a good spot to pause to stretch the old hamstrings. This morning when I got there, there was a young couple wrapped up together in a blanket, with pillows and coffee - obviously they had gotten up extra early to watch the sunrise together. Awwww...

I made these cards today, from the box of little pieces that I keep - leftovers, bits that are too small for anything else. I may be turning into my nanna - soon I will be saving string... I love cool weather - and I feel winter is on its way. Yesterday I had the first porridge of 2008. Still warm enough to eat outside though. And I got into the craft room and played around with velvets and wools and other warm fuzzy fabrics. Well I have been a very bad blog-mother - I can't believe my last post was before Christmas... Let's not make excuses, and just move on, shall we? This is the first piece of "real" sewing I've done since last year - not counting taking up hems on HandyMan's work pants and sewing name-tapes on boarding school clothes for my cousin. These are some scarves I made (is it winter yet??) from some grey wool and some fabric samples I picked up at Reverse Garbage when I was visiting Ali in the big city last weekend. We cruised the second-hand stores of Newtown, breakfasted at Piermont, drank cocktails, and generally just hung out - it's nice to catch up with far-away friends but a weekend seems like only just long enough to get back into the groove. Wish they'd hurry up and invent that teleporter...

I like the grey, but my next batch of scarves is going to be hot pink. How can I have a favourite colour, when there are so many to choose from?

Three sweet little softies for three sweet little children. On Saturday I organised a sewing bee with my sister in law and cousin in law, and we made these softies from the Softies book. I got the book for my birthday in August but this was my first project from the book. So, two Devil Cosmonauts - though the vinyl one didn't get horns - and one Mabel Monkey. Each one was given to a special little child on the weekend - and each was well received. Especially the yellow cosmonaut, he got lots of hugs.

I was really impressed with how the faces turned out - not bad for two hand sewing newbies!

As for making a softie out of vinyl - it's not easy, not least because you can't use pins - but the effect is almost worth it. And he went to this newborn, so his super drool proof powers will come in handy!

Well my exhibition debut was exciting and fun; there was plenty of wonderful and inspiring craft to admire. There was delicious organic wine and lovely company. Pictured here, my super supportive husband who drove me to Brisbane and back so that I didn't have to go by mself, and so that I could partake of the aforementioned organic wine. I will definitely be looking to do the exhibition thing again!

In other news, I've listed some furoshiki on etsy for all your environmentally friendly gift wrapping requirements. Kim and Ali, you may recognise some of the fabrics... All of my Christmas presents will be wrapped this way!

Oh and one more thing - I finally got around to making these Triple Ginger Double Chocolate Cookies by thimble - and they were totally awesome. Best cookies ever. Well, if you like chocolate and ginger which luckily for me, HandyMan doesn't.

Well tonight is the opening of the Re-Creations exhibition and, as usual, I decided at the last minute that I absolutely must make something new to wear. I quickly discarded the idea of making a fabulous new blouse or dress - too risky. What if it turns out bad, leaving me with no time for plan B? So, I got out this box of fabric samples that I was given by Lyssy May who recklessly ignores my fabric diet - anyone doing a project that requires small rectangles of tweed or taffeta? I've got a few to spare... Anyway I found some gems in there and managed to make this cuff which I think is quite fabulous. Having something new to wear is like a secret talisman that will keep me safe through the nerves of crowds and meeting new people. Plus, it's brown, and it's got sequins! Two of my favourite things.

We're having a pre-Christmas mini craft market at work - it was meant to be today but it seems I was the only one organised enough so it's now next week. So I got all seasonal and made some Christmas cards and gift tags. It's fun to play with gold thread and sparkly fabrics - and I thought the musical paper (last seen here) made good trees. It would have been perfect if the music was Christmasy but unless you can decipher the tune from that tiny fragment you'd never know it was just random olde tunes, right?

I also got carried away and made about a million furoshiki. I've been practising the various wrapping techniques, wrapping up empty boxes, wine bottles, boxes of tissues, wallets etc. If nobody buys them HandyMan will come home one day to find everything in the house festively wrapped up. Now which one of these contains the tv remote...

Or, adventures with a soldering iron. I finally made something for Whiplash - the fibre and mixed-media inspired jewellery is right up my alley.

A while ago I got a book out of the library called Stitch, Dissolve, Distort in Machine Embroidery - interesting effects, but since it required the acquisition of a soldering iron, I put that one on the backburner for a while. HandyMan handles all the power tools and HandyMan stuff in our house, and if I need a nail hammered or a jar opened I go to him - hence I wasn't sure I should be allowed near a soldering iron. But since I've been making brooches with raw edges, I've found there are some fabrics that just fray too much, even with top stitching and gentle handling - these seem to be the super synthetic polyesters. Also, somewhere in the FJ restoring process, HandyMan bought a soldering iron.

So, on the weekend I was feeling reckless enough to get out said soldering iron and have a go at melting some synthetic fibers. It's a bit scary to handle something that hot - I was worried I'd accidentally drop it and set something on fire, so I made sure HandyMan was standing by. I got the hang of it after a while and was able to cut through nylon like a hot knife through butter. It's hard to be precise though - straight lines are easy but circles are difficult, since the fabric moved around a bit, and I found Christmas tree shapes impossible. As for fabrics, nylon works the best; polyester works too but rayon just burns without melting.

And I teamed the results of this experimenting with my new love, vinyl - and whipped up a couple of brooches this afternoon.

I like how the edges look like old photographs. You can get that effect on paper with lemon juice and candles - or on synthetic fabric with a soldering iron. Just watch out for the fumes!

I was sick of looking at the teapot rings on my desk at work - and I've just got my own office for the first time ever so I'm still in that honeymoon phase where I don't want to mess it up. You know, like when you tidy up your craft room and for a while you're really conscientious with putting things away?

For something made purely out of scraps of recent projects it turned out rather cohesively, I thought. Made using foundation piecing method onto a piece of sturdy flanellette, then backed using the envelope method and machine quilted with pink thread - because that's what was on the machine at the time. I was on a roll - no time for changing threads!

I got so many things crossed off my todo list this weekend that I didn't even have time to blog them. I got this wristlet made - loosely based on a Denyse Schmidt pattern - and possibly the beginning of a love affair between me and vinyl. So easy to sew with, once you have a teflon foot, and no need to worry about finishing edges. More experimentation required - but I can see brooches, cuffs, hair thingies, napkin rings - the possibilities are endless!

I also finished off a batch of cuffs - they've been waiting patiently for press-studs for oh a couple of months... Then I filed some stuff in our new filing cabinet - hopefully it will magically make all the piles of papers in our kitchen and everywhere else disappear. I'm still in denial re tax time, however.

Don't tell anyone, but I also vacuumed the house. Don't worry, I'm over it now.

This photo is a bit old - sorry blog, for cheating - but the thing that I've spent all day working on and just finished (yay!) has to stay secret until Kim has her baby. (Not long now!) So instead, you can all admire the totally awesome cake that HandyMan and I made for my nephew Henry's second birthday. I somewhat foolishly volunteered for the cake making duties since the mother and grandmothers were all sick or too busy. I seem to recall I was also sick and too busy but the alternative was my mother slapping up some cake mix and sticking some smarties on top. Henry might not have cared that much but I did - so armed with the Women's Weekly Birthday Cake book, some pinking shears and a whole lot of butter, we whipped this cake up in record time. Squashed marshmallows for eyes, licorice stripes and the tongue is made from an orange sugar jube, cut in half so the shiny side is showing - and irresistable to a 2 year old. I attempted to get Henry to admire and appreciate the artistic skill involved in making such an awesome looking tiger - yeah, it's a tiger, whatever - but he just kept reaching for that shiny tongue. And there's only a certain amount of time where it's socially acceptable to keep a small child away from his own birthday cake.

I made a long todo list at the start of the weekend, and as per usual I did lots of things but didn't get many crossed off the list. But that's ok because in my world, the list is just to remind you that you once meant or wanted to do something, as opposed to my good friend Kim who makes lists so she doesn't get distracted by other stuff - my list is so that when I come back from being distracted, I remember where I was.

Plus, since this is my first weekend home in 2 months, I decided I could do whatever I wanted for the whole weekend.

So from my list, I finished an order for brooches, made covers for my mp3 player and started on some new shirts for me. Ali, I aim to finish them tonight!

Not from my list, I baked 3 kinds of cookies, planted tomatoes, beans, basil and cucumbers, made ginger and lime granita, started some bean sprouts, arranged some flowers, and made a big mess in my craft room. I also hemmed a dress, sewed the buttons back on some shorts and rearranged the entire kitchen. The plates are so much easier to get to - I can't believe it's taken me a year to figure that out!

And then, see, the remainder of the things on the list just get carried over to the next list - that is if I still desire to do the thing. If not, too bad, thing, you had your chance.

And now, I can cross 'blog post' off the list. Yay.

reverse garbage + workplace agreement

I may have mentioned Reverse Garbage before - well they're having a pre-Christmas exhibition and some of my creations will be on display there. And if you're super observant, you may notice that one of my brooches is featured in the flier. If you're in the area, maybe I'll see you at the exhibition launch?

And now onto more important matters: How do I get my husband to cook me dinner? First, negotiate a workplace division of labour agreement. Ours is along these lines:

HandyMan: handy man jobs, lawn mowing etc, cook dinner twice a week
djbebe: laundry, organise social life, secret crafty business etc, cook dinner three times a week
cleaner: clean house (we are currently without cleaner so house is not very clean)

Second, mention that you are hungry about one hour before you are really hungry. Third, keep nagging until he gets off ebay and starts cooking. This is what he's doing on ebay, in case you're interested. This pic is about 6 months old - HandyMan has been very busy since then and it looks like a real car now. It has a steering wheel, new seats and number plates. We're almost ready to take it to the drive-in.

But really, if neither of us feels like cooking, we get takeaway. Too bad if it's Monday night though because very restaurant in town is closed on Mondays.

Thanks for the good thoughts and karma - got back from Parkes last night so we're both a bit exhausted from driving (almost 20 hours all up), funeral matters and family overload. I know what you mean about crafty diversions - if I wasn't a crafter I might be forced to clean the fridge or something. Anyhow, today I made some more coasters and this brooch, in the aforementioned not-quite-leopard-skin rayon. I think it works. I scored a handful of these upholstery buttons at an op shop a while back, and they go perfectly with this vinyl which I also thrifted - for a dollar a metre.

And now I'm waiting for HandyMan to cook me dinner.

I've had a fairly crappy couple of weeks and I don't want to talk about it any more. To cut a long story short I'm staying home from work this week to recover from surgery and attend a funeral. The only good news is that I get to spend some quality time in my craft room so have been churning out some new brooches. Check out my etsy and/or madeit store to see more. I'm quite partial to the minty polka dot one myself - I might just make another one. The one you see here is made from a recycled Ken Done (in case you're blissfully unaware of his work) silk scarf. I'm working on the theory that any fabric, no matter how hideous, can work in small amounts. My next challenge is a particularly hideous yellow not-quite-leopard-print rayon that I accepted in a moment of weakness when a friend (I won't embarrass her by linking from this to her neo-cool blog) was throwing it out. It has been on death row in my stash for a while now but it's going to get one more chance to become a brooch like this.

We had a hail storm on Saturday night - it was very loud and fairly short but it left a mountain of hail. This pic was taken at 7am the next morning - Calico had fun exploring but got very cold little paws!

In other news, I'm putting some brooches and coasters on a stall at the IWC at USQ on Friday. I won't be there though - one more wedding in Armidale. Then wedding season will be officially over - 3 weddings in 4 weeks is a bit taxing really.

No more progress on the baby quilt - I've been getting ready for the market - covering boxes with fabric, labelling etc. Also preparing a submission for Reverse Garbage's Christmas market. Working on an idea for manly cuffs.

I didn't leave work quite early enough to get all my jobs done before my physio appointment so I was running late all afternoon - hate that! This is a closeup of the hand-quilting I'm doing on the baby quilt (my third - quilt that is, not baby) for my brother's second baby, due in February. Aren't I organised?! Should be finished in another week or two. I'm quilting it from the back, using the print as the template. So I'm stitching around pink elephants, and tigers, and flowers and giraffes. Easier than drawing templates! I went to visit my nan for lunch and went with her to the retirement village's "craft ladies" group; I took my quilt and did a bit of stitching, while listening to the ladies chatter in the background. What are you doing there Madge? Ohhh, I'm just crocheting around the edge of this hankie, the cotton hankies that my Cheryl used to get for me down at... Oh here's a pattern for 3 ply, you can't get that any more, it's all gone 4 ply... Yes it was all Azalea and do you remember when Jet came in? Oh yes it was 12 ply - that was fast knitting! Ohhh, and have you been listening to the news? My Beryl's in Phuket but thank goodness I got a text message from her yesterday and she's ok... And how about Dulcie, she shouldn't be still living on her own in that house...

A very relaxing soundtrack to hand quilting!

I also spent some time in Brisbane on the weekend with Kim and did some ironic? satirical? handquilting while sitting next to a machine-quilting frame. I can see the benefits of machine-quilting, especially for large projects, but I still prefer the more forgiving, meditative approach of handquilting. I'm about a quarter of the way to being finished!

Based on the now famous wasp bag pattern I made this. (And I got to be the first, apart from the original wasp bag, to post it up to flickr - yay!) All from my stash - which is why it doesn't have a magnetic clasp but I think it has enough body to overcome that - and I like a basket bag anyhow. I got this roll of green vinyl thrown in for free when we bought a timber and glass cabinet at a furniture closing down sale - bargain! I think I was much more excited about my roll of green vinyl than I was about the lovely cabinet. So this is its first use - turned out well though the vinyl was a bit of a pain to sew. Gotta get me a teflon foot.

I decided to have an internet-free weekend - amazing how much you can get done! So I made a list of all the things I should be doing - starting the baby quilt for my brother's impending second bub, sewing brooch backs on the mountain of denim-backed brooches I've churned out, etc etc. And I decided to do something completely different - namely, make a couple of new shirts for myself - we have 3 weddings coming up in the next month and I've got nothing to wear! I got this blue dandelion fabric from Gardams (I love that shop not only for all the gorgeous fabrics but because they wrap your purchases in brown paper and tie it with string) in Brisbane last year. It's cotton with a subtle herringbone weave which gives it a really soft texture. And, from the leftovers I made this darling little "vest" from a thrifted vintage pattern - thought I should start trying them out instead of just collecting them... Kim it was going to be for you but I really like it! Still deliberating! Not that I even have a bub, or would ever dress myself and bub in the same fabric...? Would I? Maybe I should just make another one.

And then I was on a roll with the vintage baby pattern thing so I churned out a couple of sets of bloomers with matching singlet tops. I even appliqued, though I skipped the part where you iron on interfacing to stop the stretching. But they didn't turn out too bad. Baby clothes use hardly any fabric - this still isn't helping thin out my stash much!

I whipped up 10 or so of these today, from this pile. Barely made a dent. I've signed up to 'use what I have' for August which is giving me a lot more time to be creative - I didn't realise how addicted I was to my weekly round of the thrift stores. Seriously, the stash is getting out of control. There's no room for any more!

It's raining here! For the first time in a month or so. Decent rain too, hopefully we're getting some in the dams - our water supply was at 13% last time I looked.

In other news, if you care to take a look at page 38 of this week's Brisbane news you can see my friend Alyssa the designer behind Lyssy May, and if you're observant you may notice that she's wearing one of my cuffs. Yeah, I know - you have to look closely, but do you think it might be enough to kickstart the cuff craze in Brisvegas? Subliminally?

This has been a very long week, and I'm totally pooped. My grandfather, known to everyone as Pa, passed away on Sunday. It wasn't unexpected but that only makes so much difference. He'd been in hospital for the last five weeks, gradually getting worse. I saw him in the hospital on Saturday and that was one of the hardest things I've done. He looked so small and empty, like a shell. Then Tuesday was my birthday and Wednesday was the funeral. So I've been giving hugs and having cups of tea and washing dishes and looking after my grandma all week. They were married for 61 years. He was very special, always had time for everyone, and is very loved.

It has been good though, in a way, to have the time to spend with family that we don't see that often. I also managed some diversionary crafting, as you may have noticed. But now I'm going to have a beer and veg in front of the telly. Goodnight!

I whipped up this cover for my little nephew's portable dvd player - he's almost 2 - that keeps him amused on long car trips. On their last trip up this way they said he was very concerned by the viewing - chewing his fingernails, frowning etc. I asked what he was watching, they said Chicken Little - now I remember seeing this at the movies and there were aliens and big spaceships and scary stuff - so I said they should stick to Tractor Tom for the moment.

Anyhow, they said the player was getting dusty in the car so I said I would make them a cover for it. I just hope I've put the holes for the cords in the right places. You know when you measure something and then when it's not in front of you any more you're can't be absolutely sure that you wrote it down right? Well they're back coming back tomorrow so we'll see.

I had a super excellent weekend - starting with Friday off and a visit with HandyMan and ex-bridesmaid Sponky to various fabric stores and spare car parts shops (something for everyone!), Lyssy May's shop and - finally got there - Reverse Garbage. I've been meaning to visit Reverse Garbage for a while and I read about an art exhibition here so decided to have a look. I love making things from recycled or rescued materials so it was right up my alley. The art exhibition was small but interesting, and I found some fabrics that have reuse potential - though I think the art exhibitionists may have cleaned out the haberdashery section! Worth a look for supplies if you're in Brisbane and don't have anything specific in mind.

And then, on Saturday night we finally got around to going to Toowoomba's Icon Cinema where one weekend each month they show old movies from the 30's and 40's and you sit in old bench seats with a blanket over your knees and watch a pre-movie serial and drink wine and have intermission. Intermission! Fabulous. I can't believe we haven't been before. We saw Mr Deeds goes to Town, and it was sweet and funny and starred the handsome Gary Cooper.

And Sunday, I had the whole day to myself in my craft room, and got lots of things done.

the evils of velvet

I was previously aware of the evils of satin but have only recently become fully versed in the evils of velvet. I have a mountain of velvet that I bought at a Lincraft sale - back in the good old days, when Lincraft still stocked fabric. It's been hanging up in my cupboard for about 10 years I reckon, and I just figured out one use for it - fabulous velvet cuffs. There were about 5 failed methods before I found this one that works - I had an idea for combining velvet and thrifted silk ties but couldn't get them to play nice together. Shifting and sliding, bunching and gathering. Abandon ship! Ribbon on velvet - same problem. Finally, a quilting foot and vintage cotton print border manage to save the day. And I really like the effect. Also it seems to be an acceptable use for these garish rhinestone buttons that were clearly thrifted on some very deep instinct... Anyhow, I've listed some on etsy if you want to take a look.

denim aprons + 5 minutes of fame

Two sets of full-length aprons + oven mitt + pot holder, with denim as the backing. This denim was a remnant from Spotlight and is nice and soft with yellow/green undertones - so matched perfectly with these fabrics. The floral is an Amy Butler fat quarter - and there was only scraps left over from this project that I used to make a few cards. The bird fabric was thrifted so I'm unsure of its origin - the print is a little bit Liberty but the fabric has a stiffer hand.

This wooden table is an old rickety one of HandyMan's that is only really used by me for hammering in press studs. I'm not normally trusted with HandyMan tools so using press studs for the cuffs has been exciting. I haven't hammered my fingers once! Yet. However I still don't trust myself with an axe - and although HandyMan did chop up an amount of kindling before he went away, I've run out. He better get home tonight. Because it's freezing! I stepped across the back lawn this morning to take some pics of Calico and heard the grass crunch underfoot.

In other news, HandyMan and I appeared in the local paper on Wednesday - there was apparently a backlog of wedding pics - but it was a good one - worth the wait! Hopefully we should see the professional proofs in the next couple of days - and we'll be able to relive the glamour of the day.
